Abused Product

“Abused Product – Come claim your shares!” is a collaborative video art performance, featuring Sahala Anees as the performer, Jayampathi Guruge as a Co-writer, and I, as the Video Artist, Visual and Motion Designer. Sahala’s emotional text serves as the anchor, revealing her struggles during a lockdown that unraveled the structure of her life. Writing a diary became her transformative outlet, reflecting on factors shaping her experiences—religion, culture, economic status—beyond her control. The metaphor of being an “abused product” in society adds depth to her narrative.

The performance responds to Sahala’s revelations, delving into normalized abuse from birth, questioning societal control over thought processes, and examining the risk of perpetuating distorted realities. Inspired by a teenage girl’s diary, the piece explores shared female experiences worldwide, focusing on the journey from birth to death, navigating restrictions, imposition, entanglement, and the struggle for freedom.
