Ãpasu Gamana (Fading Footprints) 2014 – Teaser 1
Based on the award-winning short story by Gunadasa Amarasekera, ‘Apasu Gamana’ explores two perspectives and delves into the inevitable distance that arises between conflicting generations within the same family. The story unfolds around a university student’s trip back home and the revelations that occur when he, along with his mother—a retired school principal—visits her old rural school. The film was produced by the batch of 2013 Bachelor of Arts (General) Degree students as part of their final year coursework, with production support provided by Vihayas Productions.
‘Apasu Gamana’ marked my debut production as a junior lecturer, working with my first group of students. At that time, student practical assignments were limited to 10-minute videos filmed within campus grounds. Our 45-minute telefilm not only raised the bar but also set a progressive trend, becoming a pivotal moment in the student’s academic journeys. The students actively participated in all aspects of filmmaking, from pre-production and production to post-production.
Despite being amateurs, my students executed their respective responsibilities with admirable skill and dedication. Professional actors were engaged in the production, finding the experience of working with an amateur crew both daunting and exciting.
I organized different student groups to handle various aspects such as screenplay writing, art direction, production design, costume and makeup, production management, casting, camera operation, and technical assistance. Besides supervising production, I also directed and served as the director of photography. The filming took place in rural locations, and we successfully wrapped up within six days. The screening of ‘Apasu Gamana’ took place in 2013 at the University of Kelaniya premises.
