In the past, the rulers built sky-high stupas. The people of the country worshiped with devotion. The current rulers are piling up garbage. The people of the country drown and die.

      • The Meethotamulla incident

    A landslide affected by an explosion within the Meethotamulla open dump resulted in many lives being lost, including that of children, buried under and suffocated by the garbage of an entire district which was being disposed of irresponsibly.

    Backstory

    2017 Meethotamulla landslide – MORE

    In the morning hours of Sinhalese New Year on 14 April 2017, a large section of the Meethoramulla garbage dump (also sometimes called the Meethotamulla Garbage Mountain) collapsed on surrounding houses.[1] Following the disaster, President Maithripala Sirisena requested the Sri Lanka Armed ForcesPolice, and the Disaster Management Centre to provide assistance and relief to the victims.

    As per the Disaster Management Centre on 20 April 2017, the landslide caused 32 deaths with 8 more missing, and affected a total of 1,765 people.
